The first question every tourist asks: "Do I need a visa for China?" The answer depends on your passport and how long you're staying.

China has significantly expanded its visa-free policies since 2024. Many visitors can now enter without applying for anything at all.

Quick Check: Do You Need a Visa?

Here's the quick version. Find which category fits you:

Visa-free entry

Your country is on the 54-country visa-free list and you're staying 30 days or less. Just book your flight and go.

Transit visa-free

You're passing through China to a third country and staying 144 hours or less. You may qualify for visa-free transit.

Visa required

Neither of the above applies. You'll need to apply for a visa before your trip.

💡 Tip: Not sure which one you are? Send us a screenshot of your passport info page and your travel dates on WhatsApp. We'll tell you exactly what you need.

Visa-Free Entry (30 Days)

China expanded its visa-free policy in late 2024, and as of 2026, citizens of 54 countries can enter China without a visa for stays up to 30 days. No application, no appointment, no fee.

Which countries are included?

Europe France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Albania, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Andorra, Belarus, Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta

⚠️ Requirements: Visa-free doesn't mean no requirements. You still need: a passport valid for at least 6 months, a return or onward flight ticket, and hotel booking information.

  • ✅ Passport on the 54-country list + staying ≤30 days = just book your flight
  • ❌ Passport not on the list = read the next sections

Transit Visa-Free (TWOV)

Even if your country isn't on the visa-free list, you may still enter China without a visa if you're transiting through. This is called Transit Without Visa (TWOV).

You qualify if all three are true

1

You're flying from Country A → China → Country B (A and B must be different countries)

2

You're staying in China for no more than 144 hours (some cities only allow 72 or 24 hours)

3

You stay within the designated transit area (usually the city and surrounding province)

Major cities and their transit limits

💡 Tip: 144 hours = 6 days. That's enough to explore one city properly. Transit visa-free is a great way to "try China" on a layover without any paperwork.

Need a Visa? How to Apply

If neither visa-free entry nor transit visa-free applies to you, you'll need to apply for a Chinese visa before your trip. The most common type for tourists is the L visa (tourism).

How to apply

1

Confirm your visa type. Tourism is usually an L visa

2

Prepare your documents: passport, photo, itinerary, hotel booking, flight tickets

3

Submit your application at the Chinese embassy or visa center in your country

4

Wait 4-7 business days for processing

5

Pick up your passport with the visa sticker inside

⚠️ Start early: Apply at least 1 month before your departure. During peak season (summer, Chinese holidays), processing may take longer.

Entry Tips

Whether you're entering visa-free or with a visa, the arrival process is the same.

What happens at the airport

1

Fill out the arrival card (handed out on the plane or available at immigration)

2

Queue at the "Foreigners" immigration lane

3

Have your fingerprints scanned

4

Collect your luggage and pass through customs

💡 Tip: Have these ready on your phone before you land: your hotel address in Chinese, your return flight confirmation, and a screenshot of your itinerary. Need to know which apps to download? See our Essential Apps guide. Immigration officers may ask to see them.

💡 Tip: Once you land, connect to the airport WiFi and send us a message. We'll confirm everything is set up for your trip and help you with the next steps.
